aging and myopia

Post a new topicby Guest on Wed Sep 04, 2002 9:08 am

I am 51 and have a long history of myopia. I have recently had a fairly rapid deterioration of near vision, distance vision is unchanged. I have had an eye test and have been told that I have had a focus shift due to aging and that this might get worst. In addition to my present multifocus glasses I have been prescribed additional reading glasses. My Ophthalmologists english is not very good and although I do not doubt his competence I would appreciate a clearer explanation of what is likely to be happening to my eyesight.

Your distance vision is unchanged -that means your myopia is not changing. What is changing is your crystalline lenses ability to focus near objects well while wearing your distance. We called this presbyopia (see under refractive errors). This begins in the mid 40's and continually progresses until your mid to upper 50's. That's whats changing.
And your progressive lenses reading portion will also continue to change until that time.
