Grave's OphthalmopathyDoes anyone else have problems with their eyes when they first wake up? Sometimes if I open my eyes too quickly when I first wake up, it feels like someone has stabbed me with a knife. It seems to affect my left eye the most. I think it might be because that's the eyeball that protrudes the most. I feel a very sharp pain, then my eye burns and waters a lot. The burning and watering lasts 30-60 min., especially if I'm in bright light. The light really makes it worse. After awhile the discomfort goes away. My ophthalmologist does not know what causes this.
Re: Grave's OphthalmopathyHave they started to change shape? Are you beginning to see double? Is your vision changing at all? If these happen it's probably GO. I've had it for 3 years now. Get your thyroid checked for sure. Use eye-drops. Adding drops to eyes that are watering really does help them dry up for some reason I forget. Good luck.
Re: Grave's OphthalmopathyYes, I know I have thyroid disease--Graves' disease. I was diagnosed 31 years ago, but it's been only in the last year or two that I have the stabbing pains sometimes in my eyes. It either has something to do with my eye muscles or maybe pressure on my eyes from swelling? I don't have it all the time--just 2 or 3 times a month. I even tape my eyelids shut sometimes because my endocrinologist suggested that I might be sleeping with my eyelids open. Suggestions anyone?
Re: Grave's OphthalmopathyI was diagnosed with GO this fall, after thinking I had allergies all summer because of watery eyes. Then the double vision came and I realized it was not allergies. So I went through several weeks of prednizone and 10 radiation treatments and am waiting to see if there is any imrovment. All I read suggests that this condition does not improve. I am interested to know if anyone has gotten better with time? It is not easy to live with this and can be downright dangerous when crossing streets, driving, etc.
Thanks, Harley
Re: Grave's OphthalmopathyAs far as getting better,,I'm not sure if yours will,, Mine sure didn't, I had the watery eyes then the eye started to look down, eventually -1or2 weeks- I was having double vision. Dr. thought it was Graves disease but wanted me to see Endocrinologist, The problem was with thyroid..After tasting and scans he determined that I should take the necular med.treatment to destroy thyroid gland..All together I had to wear eye patch for several months until thyroid level was down then start on senthroid to bring thyroid level back to normal range. -- Then I had eye surgery to detach muscles from eye,, bring it up to normal position and re-attach.. It was all a scary and very stressful situation BUT I had really good Dr.s and now my vision is good again. - I will be on medication for ever but at least no more double vision..--Bright lite still seems to be a problem..
