Greetings
I am being treated for Cogan Reese Syndrome (ICE)and have had a trab with Mitomycin and 5FU shots once or twice a week since my surgery which was 7 weeks ago. I want to know the side effects of the 5 FU as it feels like I'm losing some of my hair. I also wonder if there is any standard protocol for these shots given the rarity of the disease.

5FU has no know systemic side effects like hair loss. The protocol for the shots is twice a week, then taper over time perhaps 3 months. What the doctor is looking at is your pressures and the amount of swelling in the cornea - that's why the treatment is planned around how you are responding to the shots.

I did read an article about 5FU used for anti-cancer treatment in which there was hairloss. In glaucoma treatment, the concentration of 5FU is far less. However, a pharmacist has told me that if you were to have hairloss, it might be around the eyes- eyebrows and perhaps head. I think it's uncommon but could happen.
